2. Arecibo Observatory

Arecibo, Puerto Rico (2 hr 3 min)

Arecibo Observatory, astronomical observatory located 16 km (10 miles) south of the town of Arecibo; is the site of the world's largest single-unit radio telescope. This instrument, built in the early 1960's, employs a 305-meter (1,000-foot) spherical reflector consisting of perforated aluminum panels that focus incoming radio waves on movable antenna structures positioned about 168 meters (550 feet) above the reflector surface. The antenna structures can be moved in any direction, making it possible to track a celestial object in different regions of the sky. The observatory also has an auxiliary 30-meter (100-foot) telescope that serves as a radio interferometer and a high-power transmitting facility used to study Earth's atmosphere.

3. El Yunque

El Yunque, Río Grande, Puerto Rico (3 hr 25 min)

This tropical 'Rain forest' occupies very little area in Puerto Rico, only a single, crescent shaped, band on the windward side of the El Yunque mountains. It lies wholly within the El Yunque National Forest Reserve. The actual rain forest is at the top, you must drive to the top of the road and hike up to see the cloud or dwarf forest. There is no rainforest lodging within the park boundaries but there are many places to stay at the edge of the forest that 'feel' like the rain forest.
